Abstract:   (Original article)

Health and mental health are among the national indicators affected by macroeconomic variables. In this article, while reviewing theoretical discussions, the relationship between macroeconomic variables and the mental health index was estimated using econometric methods and cross-sectional models. For this purpose, first, the mental health index was estimated using a fuzzy inference system and using the opinions of psychologists in different provinces of the country, and then the effect of macroeconomic variables on it was examined. The results of the study show that the unemployment variable, Gini coefficient, and inflation have an inverse and significant relationship with mental health, and the per capita output variable has a positive and significant relationship with the mental health index. In other words, the mental health index is not independent of macroeconomic variables, and each of these variables had a significant effect on the mental health index in 30 provinces of the country in 2008. This highlights the need for policymakers to be careful and pay attention, especially in the economic and health sectors.
